Literacy at Calamvale Community College underpins every facet of our school curriculum. We approach the teaching of Literacy by breaking it up into three domains; Language, Literacy and Literature. Within these domains, there are multiple opportunities for our students to learn the wide range of skills needed to become confident users of the English language.
At our College, students gain experience in oral, print, visual and digital texts and practise skills in speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing and creating. Students will use and modify language for different purposes and in a range of contexts.
In Prep, students begin their literacy education with a focus on the development of oral language skills, then progress through learning sounds and letters and then to formal reading and writing.
Teaching and learning activities are focused around shared, modelled, guided and independent instruction in both reading and writing. These are designed to cater for specific learning needs and provide the opportunity for students to practise, consolidate and extend what they have learned. Students benefit from the use of technology in the classroom to support literacy learning.
