The study of English is central to the learning and development of all young Australians. It helps create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate and build relationships with others and with the world around them.
The teaching of English is broken up into three domains; Language, Literacy and Literature. Literacy at Calamvale Community College underpins every facet of our school curriculum. Within these domains there are multiple opportunities for our students to learn the wide range of skills needed to become confident users of the English language.
At our College, students gain experience in oral, print, visual and digital texts and practise skills in speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing and creating. Students will inquire into text forms and use and modify language for different purposes and in a range of contexts. Through the teaching of English, students engage imaginatively and critically with literature to expand the scope of their experience. As students’ progress through their schooling, they develop oral language skills, knowledge of sounds and letters, and then transfer and apply these skills in reading and writing.
Teaching and learning activities are focused around modelled, shared, guided and independent instruction in both reading and writing. These are designed to cater for specific learning needs and provide the opportunity for students to practise, consolidate and extend what they have learned. Units of work in English are authentically aligned with the PYP Units of Inquiry.
