Introduction

The Athlete Development Program was established in 2014 with the aim of extending the leadership and academic performance of our students through sport and physical activity. This signature development program is offered to student athletes in Years 7 to 10 to cater to their growth in academic, athletic and leadership contexts.

Athlete Development Program Mission Statement

To place Calamvale Community College students along a pathway of leadership through aspirational sport performance and high academic outcomes.

Philosophy:

The Athlete Development Program [est. 2014] is a signature athlete-centred leadership program which provides sporting opportunities for students from Year 7 to Year 10 of Calamvale Community College. The application of an enriched Physical Education Curriculum was integrated using the Long-Term Athlete Development Model (Balyi, 1998). This model (pictured below) was a crucial paradigm in understanding the needs of a developing adolescent. The Long-Term Athlete Development framework is widely identified as the optimal sport development model for student athletes. LTAD offers a pragmatic and scientific approach where a systematic, integrated system is built around developing student-athletes and identifying appropriate levels of competition at each stage.

Calamvale Community College's philosophy in relation to the Athlete Development Program is that an athlete-centred, coach-driven and administration-supported approach to student development will help develop a lifelong involvement of student-athletes in physical activity and sports participation. Further, this program will help support the overall development of our students through support for their academic progress and their growth as citizens and leaders in our community.

Athlete Development Program Learner Values

The Athlete Development Program aims to develop student athletes as athletes, learners and leaders in the school community with the core values of:

  • Respect
Successful athletes respect themselves, their opponents and their sport, and demonstrate this through the way in which they conduct and present themselves while engaging in sporting activities. This includes while training, when travelling to and from events, while spectating or otherwise engaged at a playing venue, and while participating in competition.

  • Resilience
Successful athletes demonstrate resilience by always giving the best of themselves and working to achieve success regardless of the challenge. In competition this is encapsulated in the saying that the game is not fished until the handshake.

  • Responsibility
Successful athletes take responsibility for ensuring that they are physically and mentally prepared for training and competition. This includes taking responsibility for ensuring that they have all required equipment and correct uniforms. Successful athletes also take responsibility for ensuring that commitments that can influence their performance and availability (e,g, academic commitments) are managed effectively.

  • Initiative
Successful athletes take the initiative by seeking to improve themselves through practice, engagement and observation to develop their skills and tactical knowledge of their sport. In doing so, successful athletes seek to develop themselves to support their growth within the school community.
