Hello from Joanna, the School Based Youth Health Nurse
I am a Clinical Nurse working for Children's Health Queensland in the School Based Youth Health Nurse Service. I am based at school on Thursday and Friday.
The Youth Health Nurse works with students, school staff and parents to address a range of health and wellbeing issues such as:
- Healthy eating and physical activity
- Feeling unhappy or Stressed
- Relationships
- Healthy skin
- Sexual health
- Smoking/vaping, alcohol and other drugs
- Personal and family problems
- Growth and development.
I work with individuals and school members to identify and act on issues that affect both the individual and the health of the school community. This includes helping with curriculum, teaching, and learning activities, fostering an environment and school culture that supports health and wellbeing, and collaborating with community and other services. I can present classroom lessons to the students for health-related topics- commonly puberty, sexual health, mental health, drugs, and alcohol. Come chat with me to book this in.
My office is located in the Secondary HQ building, students can drop-in at breaktime or make appointments during school day. I want to clarify that I do not provide physical healthcare. This is the responsibility of EQ-employed nurses. Additionally, I do not administer first aid; this is the role of the school's First Aid personnel.
