In 2021, Calamvale Community College began its journey towards formally implementing the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IB MYP) in Years 7-9. Successful implementation of this program will mean our students will receive an IB education from Prep to the end of Year 9, with the option of continuing this into the IB Diploma Program in Senior Secondary.
The IB MYP is mapped to the Australian Curriculum and encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, preparing them for success in further study and in life. It aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathise with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The programme empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers.

Research shows that students participating in the MYP:
  • build confidence in managing their own learning, learn by doing, connecting the classroom to the larger world
  • thrive in positive school cultures where they are engaged and motivated to excel
  • develop an understanding of global challenges and a commitment to act as responsible citizens.

In the MYP students develop both subject-specific and interdisciplinary understanding, through the organising of the Australian Curriculum across 8 subject groups:
Language and literature: Studies in the language of instruction of the school - English
Language acquisition: Mandarin Chinese, Spanish
Individuals and societies: Humanities, including History, Geography, Civics
Sciences: Biological, Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences
Mathematics: including the application of Mathematics in real-world contexts
Arts: Including Visual Arts and Performing Arts – Music, Drama, Film, Dance
Physical and health education: Practical and theory studies in sports, health, wellbeing and identity.
Design: Digital, Design, Food Technology and STEM (Science, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics)

Using global contexts, MYP students develop an understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet through developmentally appropriate explorations of:

The College’s Curriculum Framework is based on inquiry-based learning. Teachers use the Phases of Inquiry (see below) to engage students in concept-based inquiry.
